AJAX

Asynchronous JavaScript and XML or AJAX is basically a set of ideas and technology that enable websites to work in a more dynamic way. The core bit of functionality that enabled this was when browsers provided a way for developers to send HTTP Requests and read the Responses. By sending messages back and forth from the web server without the user leaving the page a much more dynamic interface could be built – much more like a traditional desktop application. These days most of this functionality is best used through one of several really popular javascript frameworks such as PrototypeJS or JQuery.
